When Dolores realized that the bathroom door wouldn't open, she banged on it furiously, calling for help. Unable to free her friend, Dunia ran to get the janitor, and when she returned, Dolores's curses had turned into screams. The door vibrated under the blows. The sound of nails scraping against the wood was atrocious. The panicked janitor couldn't find the right key. There was a thud followed by a scream more piercing than the others. The janitor dropped his keyring, and the noise stopped. Strangely, none of his keys could open the door. It was a locksmith who finally managed to break the lock with a drill. While a police officer pointed his gun at the "Women's WC" sign, his colleague gently swung the door open, pressing his back against the wall as if a monster might emerge from the toilet. It was empty. All that remained of Dolores were nail scratches on the door and a tuft of hair on the floor. It was the first confirmed case of a disappearance in a bathroom. It happened in 1974. Since then, about a dozen people worldwide have gone missing after being trapped in these sordid, cramped, and solitary places that are bathrooms.
