When Smaug fell at Erebor, Bilbo found an egg in his hoard and took it to the Shire—unaware that there was a second one. Decades passed, Bilbo grew old, and while the first egg never hatched, a dragon emerged from the second. Now the Shire is threatened with being engulfed in flames. Bilbo is too old to face the dragon, but he has prepared: over the years, he gathered equipment for this day—the sword Sting, a Mithril chainmail, reinforced bracers, a mighty helmet, and the One Ring.
